The Department of Mechanical Engineering Technologies and Materials Science (once - mining engineering technologies), founded in 1936, is one of the leading departments of the Dnipro University of Technology. It received its recognition and respect thanks to the constant improvement of educational technologies, the search and development of current problems of modern mechanical engineering and materials science, the inheritance of glorious traditions laid down by outstanding scientists and activists of the higher school during its creation, as well as inextricable ties with production, successes, and achievements of its numerous graduates.

The department prepares modern designers-technologists and debuggers of equipment with software control, who are in great demand in Ukraine and abroad (Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Germany, England, Belgium, the USA, China), since the graduates possess modern systems of automated production and computer technologies for manufacturing parts on numerically controlled machines and 3D printers. All graduates are assigned to leading enterprises of Ukraine, from mining to rocket-building, including design institutes and plants of the food, automobile, metallurgical, railway, and aviation industries, as well as private engineering firms.

The modern level of mechanical engineering is based on the assimilation of high technologies and the latest materials, which includes a set of main features - scientific capacity, systematicity, physical and mathematical modeling for the purpose of structural and parametric optimization, a highly efficient work process, a computer technological environment and automation of all stages of development. reliability, environmental cleanliness with technical and personnel support, precision equipment, tools, diagnostic system, computer control network and specialized personnel training. All this guarantees the production of products and materials with a new level of functional, aesthetic, and ecological properties, it guarantees their competitiveness in the modern household market. Today, the staff of the department is made up of high-class professionals who train specialists at the modern level.

Until January 1, 2014, the head of the department was Didyk Rostyslav Petrovych, a mechanical mining engineer, doctor of technical sciences, professor, honored worker of science and technology of Ukraine, laureate of the State Prize of Ukraine in 2013.

Since February 2014, Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor Volodymyr Protsiv has been appointed as the head of the department.

From January 2023, Vitaliy Derbaba, the candidate of technical sciences and associate professor was appointed as the head of the department.
